NHS Home Eye Test Eligibility 2026 — Complete Guide for Essex

Templeman Opticians Essex · Updated 2026

If leaving the house for an eye test has become difficult — for you or someone you care for — you may be entitled to a completely free, NHS-funded eye examination in your own home. This guide explains exactly who qualifies, what the test involves, and how to book one in Essex.

Who qualifies for a free NHS home eye test?

You're eligible for an NHS-funded domiciliary (home visit) eye test if any of the following apply:

  • You're a care home resident
  • You're housebound — unable to leave home unaccompanied because of a physical or mental illness or disability
  • You receive Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  • You receive Income Support or income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
  • You're registered blind or partially sighted
  • You have diabetes or glaucoma
  • You're aged 60 or over
  • You're under 16, or under 19 and in full-time education

Only one of these needs to apply for you to qualify — you don't need to meet all of them.

What if I don't qualify for NHS funding?

That's absolutely fine — a home eye test doesn't require NHS eligibility. Private home eye tests are available from £95–£120 depending on your location in Essex. Everyone deserves proper eye care, whether it's NHS-funded or private.

What happens during a home visit?

The visit is a full, proper eye examination — the same standard of care you'd receive at a high street practice, just carried out in the comfort of your own home or care home room. Your optometrist will check your vision, eye health, and update or issue a new prescription if needed. If you need glasses afterwards, frame selection and fitting can also be arranged as a home visit — see our Glasses & Lenses page.

Care home residents

If you manage a care home, residents can usually be tested together in a single scheduled visit rather than individually — see our Care Homes page for details on how block visits and contracts work, including NHS claims handling and CQC documentation.
